Northland Man Reunites With Those Who Saved His Life

Two years after surviving a horrific, head-on collision, Dakota Williams, 33, of Gladstone returned to Liberty Hospital on Feb. 9, 2024, to meet our trauma team and the first responders from Kansas City Missouri Fire Department (KCFD) who saved his life on a bitterly cold day two years ago.

“The last thing I remember is dropping off my daughter’s basketball shirt for her,” Dakota recalled, noting the accident happened just before 6 a.m. Feb. 25, 2022, on Hwy. 291 west of Liberty when an impaired driver swerved into his lane. “I woke up from a coma 32 days later at KU.”

KCFD responders used the Jaws of Life to remove him from his demolished car and transport him to Liberty Hospital where the trauma team stabilized him and prepared him to be airlifted to The University of Kansas Health System.

“With internal bleeding, lots of broken bones and traumatic brain injury, the odds were against my survival,” he said. “Today, I am filled with titanium screws and plates.”

Dakota’s recovery included 24 surgeries – 19 within the first month – as well as 18 months of rehabilitation, including learning to walk again.

The father of two said he never gave up hope of recovery. “I feel I’ve been left here for a reason,” he said. “I want to be the best dad I can be.”

His family joined him for the special reunion where his mother said some of Dakota’s first words when we woke up were that he was glad the accident happened to him. She thought that was an odd thing to say, so she asked what he meant.

Dakota said, “That driver was going to hit someone, and I’m glad it wasn’t a mother and her kids or someone who couldn’t power through and survive.”

FOX4 News Kansas City captured the special reunion. Watch the full story below.

Celebrating 50 Years of Health in the Northland

Liberty Hospital has reached a new milestone! 2024 marks our 50th year, and we couldn’t be prouder – or more thankful – to serve this community. We see this anniversary as a chance to celebrate our achievements while looking forward to so many exciting things ahead. We also see it as a time to honor all those in the Liberty Hospital family who have played a role in bringing us to where we are today – and oh, how far we’ve come.

When we opened in February 1974, we had 175 employees and 39 physicians, and we admitted 96 patients in our first week. Within four years, we had grown enough to add more space for surgery, physical and respiratory therapy, lab testing and more.

Liberty Hospital continued to grow throughout the 1980s, including an East Wing expansion that doubled our hospital size. During this decade of growth, we opened our Breast Diagnostics Center, Emergency Department, Obstetrics Unit and Education Center.

Our crowning achievement of the 1990s was our new Doctors Building, which brought 100 more physicians to our medical staff, along with some additional hospital services. We also added several outpatient special procedures and new, state-of-the-art technologies.

In the 2000s, we added new floors to our hospital, enabling us to open more beds and serve more patients. We acquired and expanded numerous primary and specialty care clinics, including Sports Medicine and Breast Care Center. In 2015, Liberty Hospital Urgent Care Shoal Creek was our first clinic to open west of I-35. In 2017, we began a beloved new local tradition: the annual Liberty Half Marathon/5K.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020s started off in uniquely challenging ways, but our service and dedication to our community never wavered. We remained strong – and today, as we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we are preparing to partner with The University of Kansas Health System and look forward to what’s ahead.
